Heartland Housing develops and manages sustainable, innovative and high-quality affordable housing. We build communities. We apply what we learn to identify emerging housing needs and meet them. We help create life-changing opportunities for our residents, and we educate policymakers and civic leaders.
Meeting a Critical Need
Heartland Housing was founded in 1988 to provide housing for some of the most vulnerable Chicagoans. Twenty-five years ago, we began the rehabilitation of a 62 unit apartment building in Uptown – one of the first affordable housing projects in Chicago to serve people with HIV or AIDS – and have since developed more than 1,850 units in 18 properties in Chicago and Milwaukee, WI. We currently manage approximately 900 apartments. We house seniors, veterans, people with AIDS, homeless and near-homeless single people and families, ex-offenders, and workers, who all need an affordable, stable place to call home.
Integrated Real Estate Development Process
We invite key stakeholders to partner with us early in the design process to create a comprehensive vision for each of our new affordable or supportive housing developments. In articulating a shared vision of a how a building’s program, spaces and sustainable building features interrelate, we push the envelope on how we can best serve our future residents.
We strive to go beyond green building certifications to holistic green living in our new properties, including onsite food production, renewable energy sources, and robust tenant education.
Community-Focused Property Management
Across the Heartland Housing portfolio, our property management team creates safe and healthy homes for residents while maintaining the structural and financial health of our portfolio. They strive to build communities within and beyond the walls of our 900 apartments. We build relationships with our supportive service partners to offer residents opportunities to live with dignity while improving their quality of life via one-on-one case management, workshops, training, educational and recreational programs.
